Peer Review Exercise
ENGL 233

Peer review is a process of gaining feedback by others who are involved in the same domain. Peer review is not so much about judging your work, but getting some advice about how you might make it better. You will not always agree with the feedback. That is ok.

You will be graded here on your engagement with the process in addition to any suggested improvements to the translation.

This exercise is based on your choice of two passages from Ibn Jubayr, for which you have prepared a draft translation.

What am I looking for in this assignment:
-frank assessment of the overall quality of the draft TT, strengths and weaknesses
-answering all the questions with engagement
-your thoughts about how the peer review process helped or didn’t help your translation

What you should include in your peer review:
-your original translation
-a revision (if deemed necessary)
-answers to the questions below
-your name, your partner’s name, the passage you picked.

Your partner’s text:

1. What are two general strengths of the TT?

2. What are two general weaknesses of the TT?

3. Pick three criteria for translation (appropriateness, equivalence, culture, register, grammar/structure, cohesion, etc.) and give your evaluation of how your partner did on those points. Cite specifics.

4. If there are any inappropriately translated items, offer your solution for a “good” translation.

5. When you read your partner’s TT without reference to the original, was your impression the same as yours about the passage? If not, why?

Your comments on the feedback from your partner:

1. Did your partner understand the spirit of your draft TT?

2. Are there any points on which you disagree with the feedback?

3. How did the process make your translation better? Give specifics.

Please turn this reflection in Wednesday, 4 November with all of the above in class. This is not a blog posting.
